My name is Kerri Ann Tester, and I’m a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I focus on working with older adults and specialize in working with women. Some of the areas where I can offer support include…
- Work/life balance
- Career changes
- Returning to work
- Life transitions (at any age)
- Serious and/or chronic illness
- Life review
- Caregiving (for parents, adult children, partners, etc.)
- Aging & retirement
- Panic attacks
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Depending on your reason for coming to me, I may use one of more therapeutic approaches or models. Two of my most commonly used techniques are Narrative Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.
During my training as a social worker, I was immediately drawn to Narrative Therapy, which I often use with clients working on issues related to self-esteem, work, transitions, personal history, and relationships, among others. It’s a true privilege for clients to share with me their own experiences in their own words, and I take great satisfaction in helping people explore the various “stories” they’ve written for themselves over the course of many years, or even decades. When we look deeply into these self-authored stories, we can often find, perhaps hidden within deep pain and confusion, a path that may lead toward healing, forgiveness, growth, and hope.
In cases of anxiety, trauma, and depression, I may use strategies based on a Cognitive-Behavioral model. Over the course of our lives, we all develop certain defensive strategies tailored to protect us within the specific environments in which we find ourselves. Over time, as we grow and move on, our circumstances may change–but our old defensive systems often remain in place. Using a CBT model, I can help you explore specific examples from your own behavior, feelings, and beliefs that may help you identify patterns and cycles that can contribute to distress, panic, and other unpleasant reactions and experiences.
I can offer to you a supportive, nurturing environment, free of judgment, blame, and guilt. I offer my own perspective, and I encourage you to expand and refine your own view of yourself–not only of your past, but also your present and future.
Exploring your options for support is just the beginning of what might be a fulfilling new journey for you. I sincerely hope that you’ll take the next step and reach out. I look forward to hearing your story and to sharing just a part of your next journey with you.
